Swimming Away From Back Injury
In many cases, swimming can be a very helpful exercise for back pain sufferers. Ned Denison and Swimming the English Channel
I started as the first of six 2005 Irish Channel solo aspirants to swim in July and I failed to get to France, pulled after 8 hours. The seas were rough, the skies dark, my feeding technique a disaster and I was dehydrated and suffering from hypothermia. I booked a 2nd swim the same September period as the last two Irish swimmers and set about repairing my dead left arm and putting in some different training.
Starts, Turns, and Sighting in an Open Water or Triathlon Swim
Swimming in a triathlon can be an unpleasant experience. Your swim is going to be disrupted by dozens (or hundreds) of other triathletes churning the water. The mental focus, so simple during a pleasant lap swim at the local swimming pool, becomes almost impossible. Visibility sucks, there is no wall to push off, and the 10 degree drop in water has completely taken away your breath. So... what's the best way to deal with this difficult aspect of open water swimming? Train the way you race.

Open water swimming is a never ending adventure. Some of my favorite memories are from swims. There is a freedom and challenge swimming in open water which just can't be experienced in the pool. Besides that, it's FUN!!
My Escape from Alcatraz Swim
The Escape from Alcatraz Swim. We signed up nearly a year ago, hungry for a new challenge. After months of speculation and debate from colleagues, friends and families regarding sharks in San Francisco Bay, we arrived in San Francisco. That evening a group of us hopefuls walked down to one of the piers to suss out the lay of water and weigh up what we were about to take on. When we saw Alcatraz we had a double take, and comments from our weary jet lagged bunch could be heard.

The Joy of Swimming
There is a special moment when I first get in the water and push off the wall that I use to get myself to the swimming pool. It feels just like flying. I’m completely submerged, weightless gliding through the silky water. The only sound is that of the bubbles as they rush past my ears. The outside world is completely gone. It is just me, my own thoughts, and the gentle warm water as it slips past my skin. This moment is complete and full of promise. It lacks nothing and wants nothing.
My First - and Only - Swimming Invention
A 10 kilometer open-water swim. All I remember is the mind-numbing tedium and the relentless boredom as I swam, staring at the same tree with every breath I took. Stroke, breath, tree. Stroke, breath, tree. Stroke, breath, damn bloody tree... It started, as these things usually do, in the hot tub after a late night masters swim practice. I invented what I called my LDSND.
